Hey there! I’m Lexi Young (she/they) - founder of this mischievous venture. My background is deeply rooted in the performing arts, and my passion for community-driven experiences has shaped my journey. Growing up in the vibrant dance and entertainment scenes of San Diego, California, in a creative household, I developed a deep love for storytelling, performance, and community engagement.
From my early days in theater to my experiences with Disney Cruise Lines and touring the country, I’ve thrived in spaces where performance, politics (in this case, Pleasure Activism - look up the book trust me), and connection intersect. In 2020, I found inspiration in New York City’s What The Float community, where I learned how reclaiming public spaces through dance could spark joy, deepen friendship and playfulness in ways I’d never imagined, which ignited my vision for Strut The Yard. This vision is all about honoring and uplifting the legacy of dance and music within marginalized communities.
With Strut The Yard, I’m committed to and excited about creating inclusive and joyous experiences, celebrating BIPOC and queer artists, and engaging with the rich history of dance that connects back to the iconic ballrooms and dancefloors of Chicago, Detroit, and NYC - where queer Black and Brown joy in the face of violently bigotry gave birth to the modern mainstream phenomenon of EDM and House music.
Having recently made Durham, NC my home, it’s important to me to acknowledge and respect the stewards of dance, music, and queer communities that have been integral to this area long before I set down roots here. I'm honored to be a part of that community.
A silent disco is an experience where attendees wear wireless headphones to listen to the same music, allowing you to dance and party without disturbing the surroundings. You control the volume, making it a unique and immersive experience!
Absolutely! While we center and uplift our Queer BIPOC kin, we welcome all bodies, identities, and expressions. Our events celebrate diversity and inclusivity.
